HISTORICAL CONTEXT During October 8-11, 1944, members of the U.S. 1st Infantry Division captured the Belgian town of Verlautenheide. Part of the Battle of Aachen, U.S. soldiers surprized enemy troops, which were recovering from heavy allied bombardment of the region.
